Notice Regarding Smoking Inside Drapers Downtown DC Effective Thursday, September 5, 2019
W. Curtis Draper Tobacconist Downtown DC (699 15th Street NW ) will be non-smoking until further notice, effective Thursday, September 5, 2019. The landlord demanded that all smoking in the shop must cease. In order to remain compliant with our lease we voluntarily agreed, even though the building has not given any reason, or explanation for the demand. Drapers has retained legal counsel to contest and try to rectify the situation.
The building that houses Drapers was purchased in 2018 by a German group, Munich RE, for $250,000,000. We believe that they want to bully us out of the space for a more handsome lease from a corporate tenant. Sadly, this is becoming a common trend in DC when buildings are sold; small businesses get pushed out for larger tenants. When previously confronted with aroma issues a year and a half ago, we were told to address the problem. We addressed the issue and have had no issues since. Munich RE and their property managers appear to be hedging that by not allowing smoking, we will be forced to vacate; this is not the case.
W Curtis Draper Tobacconist will continue to be open normal business hours and will offer the same service and diverse inventory that our customers have come to expect for over 130 years. We apologize for the inconvenience and look forward to having this issue resolved shortly.
