50% larger Space, Additional Seating & Walk-In Humidor for DC’s Oldest Tobacco Shop

Washington, DC — May 23, 2011 — W. Curtis Draper Tobacconist, the District’s oldest full-service tobacconist, today announced it is moving it’s flagship store from 640 14th Street NW one block west to the corner of 15th Street and G Street NW. Drapers will be occupying a portion of what is now the White House Gift Shop, which will consolidate into a smaller storefront (The official address is to be announced). Owners John Anderson and Matt Krimm anticipate an August 2011 opening.

The 14th Street location has not permitted smoking in the store since January 2011 — at the behest of building management — due to a tenant dispute. Despite Anderson and Krimm’s best efforts, a solution could not be reached. As a result, foot traffic dropped considerably making a move for the small business a necessity.

According to Anderson, “After 124 years in the District, the last 20 on 14th Street, we pride ourselves on being good neighbors. We look forward to continuing to do so on 15th.”

The new location will be adjacent to the White House, 50% larger at 1,970 square feet, offer seating for 10 and a walk-in humidor. The contemporary space, designed by DC-based Collective Architecture, will showcase Draper’s extensive selection of premium cigars, pipe tobacco and smoking accessories.

“Ironically, the challenges of the last few months have led us to create a space that will allow us to carry more product and provide a better experience for our clientele. As the saying goes, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” said Krimm.
