Yesterday, The Washington Post‘s Breaking News Blog reported that Judge Sean D. Wallace has decided on the legality of Prince George’s County (MD) legislation that banned the sale of single cigars, requiring stores to sell them in packages of at least five. Wallace ruled that the legislation did notviolate the plantiff’s due process or equal protections rights.

Before I even read this article, I already know the ‘logic’ behind such stupid law making. I’m not gonna gut a premium cigar to smoke weed. How about just applying this to convenience stores and gas stations? Do these guys really think, or do they just wanna give the illusion of governing?

I’m sure that I’ll raise the ire of some readers by saying that I support the “intent” of the law…but the outcome was horrible for me. By that I mean, I saw a small Chinese carryout selling cheap cigars (keeping them in an open box in the cooking area gives you an idea of their quality.) It was to stop the use of them as “blunts” — used by individuals (many teens) to buy them to pack them with marijuana (my feelings on that issue is another story.) However, the impact on casual smokers like me is awful — as rarely do I want 5 of the same cigar at the same time. Even if it’s only 5 different cigars, for a casual smoker (3 per wk @ most during the summer), it makes buying a lot more difficult.
